China's Foreign Ministry Cites the CIIE and Canton Fair, Laying Out Four Observations on Balanced Trade

Sunday, November 8, 2026 · World · GSM News

One day after the opening of the ninth China International Import Expo (CIIE), China's Foreign Ministry used its regular press conference to address the two back-to-back trade fairs. At the November 6, 2026 press conference, spokesperson Guo Jiakun was asked about the opening of the ninth CIIE and the Hongqiao International Economic Forum in Shanghai the previous day and the conclusion of the 140th Canton Fair that Wednesday, and about media commentary that the two expos show China, both the world's factory and the world's market, both a "super seller" and a "super buyer," playing an important role in addressing imbalanced trade.

Guo said the expos are important windows on China's global connectedness and on how it enables development and delivers for people across the world. He noted that in his keynote speech at the CIIE opening ceremony, Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang said the expo, since its inception, has witnessed China's firm resolve and concrete actions to advance high-standard opening up, the tangible outcomes and substantial benefits achieved by businesses and people from all countries in sharing opportunities in the Chinese market, and the unremitting efforts and important contributions of people from all sectors to improving global economic governance.

Ding shared four observations on realizing the balance of trade. First, countries should share market opportunities, enhance openness and connectivity, better leverage their respective comparative advantages, and promote balance by making the economic pie bigger together. Second, countries should engage in deeper investment cooperation, optimize the cross-border layout of industries, create favorable conditions for businesses, and promote balance through integration into global industrial and supply chains. Third, countries should harness innovation, improve supply quality, expand the frontiers of trade, and promote balance through advancing transformation and upgrading. Fourth, countries should enhance mutual understanding and trust, give due consideration to each other's legitimate concerns, resolve differences through consultation, and promote balance by removing barriers.

Guo said China will work with relevant parties to make the CIIE a success and fully leverage its four major platforms of international procurement, investment promotion, people-to-people exchanges, and openness and cooperation, bringing more benefits to people around the world.
