LINCOLN, Nebraska — Mullen High School's girls volleyball team swept defending champion Wynot 25-18, 25-11, 25-15 on November 7 at the Bob Devaney Sports Center in Lincoln to win Nebraska's Class D2 state championship, the first girls state title in school history. Five years ago this program won a single match in a season; it now completes a five-year turnaround, finishing 33-2. Wynot ended 23-11 after upsetting the top seed in the semifinals. Mullen is also the first Mountain Time Zone school to win a state volleyball title since Paxton in 2007. In the final, Mullen's Jenna Donohoe posted 13 kills and 2 blocks to lead the way. Head coach Nicole Urada said afterward that the team fought back from trailing 20-8 in its first state-tournament match, and that the title belongs to five years of persistence by the whole squad.
