New Mexico DOT Studies Upgrading About 92 Miles Toward a Future Interstate 27 Linking Texas With I-25

Sunday, November 8, 2026 · States · GSM News

RATON, New Mexico — KOB 4 and the Albuquerque Journal reported on November 7 that the New Mexico Department of Transportation is studying whether to upgrade about 92 miles of U.S. 64 and U.S. 87 from the Texas state line to Raton into a future Interstate 27, connecting at the north end with Interstate 25. The proposed interstate is part of the Ports-to-Plains Corridor, meant to open trade routes from North America's farm and energy regions to Mexico and Canada and to improve freight conditions in northeastern New Mexico. The federal government has provided the City of Raton $1 million through fiscal 2026 appropriations for planning studies, environmental review and preliminary design of the segment; Representative Teresa Leger Fernández said the funds will help Raton prepare for the future highway connection and surrounding development. The state DOT is also finalizing a contract with a consulting firm for a phase-one feasibility report, with the study expected to take 18 months. Raton sits in New Mexico's northeast corner near the Colorado line and is the corridor's northern gateway in the state. Officials stress the money is for early study only, not construction; any highway would take years and is not guaranteed to be built.
