Follow-Up: Senegal's Interior Ministry Confirms Migrant Boat Sank off Kebemer: 21 Bodies Recovered, One Survivor

Sunday, November 8, 2026 · World · GSM News

DAKAR — Senegal's Interior Ministry confirmed in a statement on November 8 that a boat carrying irregular migrants sank off Kebemer in the country's northwest. As of the evening of November 7, rescuers had recovered 21 bodies and rescued one survivor, the ministry said. The toll remains provisional, searches are continuing, and authorities are assisting the victims' families.

The sinking occurred off Kebemer, about 180 kilometres north of Dakar. On the afternoon of November 7, around 20 bodies washed up on Lompoul beach in the area, as the Senegalese news agency APS reported at the time, citing a security source. The newspaper Le Soleil reported that most of the victims came from the communes of Leona and Thieppe in Kebemer department.

The ministry did not say how many people were on board or what caused the sinking. The boat was carrying people attempting to migrate irregularly. Senegal's coast is one of the main departure points for West African migrants bound for Europe, and the Atlantic crossing to Spain's Canary Islands is considered one of the world's most dangerous sea migration routes. Senegalese authorities also said this week that they had intercepted another boat carrying 142 migrants on Friday.
