More Than 20 Bodies Found on Northern Senegal Beach After Suspected Migrant Boat Capsize

Saturday, November 7, 2026 · World News · GSM News

Dakar — More than 20 lifeless bodies were found on the afternoon of November 7 on the beach at Lompoul, in the Kébémer department of Senegal's northern Louga region, the Senegalese Press Agency (APS) reported, citing a security source. A pirogue had been reported capsized off the locality the previous day.

The bodies were discovered along the shore in the Tébène area, in the Potou sector, APS said. The exact circumstances of the wreck, where the boat had set out from, and how many people were on board remain unknown for now.

Senegal's coast is one of the main departure points for irregular migration by sea toward Europe. The Atlantic crossing from West Africa to Spain's Canary Islands stretches more than 1,500 kilometres and is considered one of the deadliest migration routes in the world, with fatal wrecks occurring repeatedly in recent years.

Local newspaper Le Soleil later reported that the death toll had risen to 21. Senegalese authorities have not yet released the identities or nationalities of the dead, and the cause of the wreck is under investigation. (Source: APS)
