Moderate Slate Sweeps Three San Francisco School Board Seats; Teachers Union Shut Out for First Time in a Decade

SAN FRANCISCO, California — San Francisco voters elected school board president Phil Kim and newcomers Tim Tang and Autumn Brown-Garibay to the Board of Education, leaving the teachers union without a seat for the first time in more than a decade in a decisive win for the city's moderate political alliance. Counting ran close after Election Day and the results were settled on Thursday, November 6; all three winners were endorsed by the moderate group GrowSF and the San Francisco Democratic Party. Kim, the incumbent board president, was confirmed re-elected shortly after polls closed on election night; Tang, a public finance analyst, and Brown-Garibay, a district parent, took the other two seats on Thursday, each holding about 15.5% as counting continued into Friday.

For the first time in over a decade, no candidate endorsed by United Educators of San Francisco won a seat on the seven-member board. The union-backed slate — Virginia Cheung, Ryan Hazelton and Raina Téllez — finished in order behind the three leaders. It is the union's first school board shutout since 2016.

The new board faces a run of hard, consequential decisions on enrollment policy and school configuration, including possible school mergers as the San Francisco Unified School District contends with shrinking enrollment and budget pressure. The result also confirms moderates as a leading force in recent San Francisco city elections, with the fight over the direction of education policy set to continue.
