OpenAI Closes First $11 Billion of New Funding Round at a $1.25 Trillion Valuation

SAN FRANCISCO — OpenAI has closed the first tranche of a new funding round, raising about $11 billion at a $1.25 trillion valuation, according to Bloomberg and Reuters. The first closing took place on Friday, November 6. The valuation is up from $852 billion in the company's March round, which drew $122 billion in committed capital.
The round initially targeted about $30 billion at a sought valuation of $1.4 trillion to $1.5 trillion; with investor interest reportedly below initial expectations, the final raise may total around $20 billion. SoftBank and MGX participated, and Coatue, T. Rowe Price, Sequoia Capital, Founders Fund and a16z are also among the investors, the reports said.
Chief Financial Officer Sarah Friar discussed the round on CNBC on November 6. OpenAI declined to comment on the terms. The capital arrives as OpenAI pursues its massive data-center and computing build-out. This report is compiled from Bloomberg and Reuters reporting.
