Two Shootings During Winston-Salem State Homecoming Weekend Leave One Dead and Three Injured; 20-Year-Old Charged With Murder

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Two separate shootings during homecoming weekend at Winston-Salem State University in Winston-Salem, Forsyth County, North Carolina, left one person dead and three others injured. Assistant Police Chief Jason Swaim of the Winston-Salem Police Department said both shootings occurred on campus on Saturday night, November 7, with the first emergency call coming at about 9:45 p.m. Peyton Patterson, 19, was found with a gunshot wound and died despite life-saving efforts; a 22-year-old woman was also shot, treated at a hospital and released.
Police said Ziyaire Spinks, 20, has been arrested and charged with murder and possession of a firearm on educational property, and is being held without bond. The investigation remains in its preliminary stages; police have not determined whether the two shootings are connected, and the conditions of the other injured people have not been released. An earlier campus lockdown has been lifted, and police say the campus is safe.
Chancellor Bonita J. Brown said in a statement Sunday morning that "this senseless violence" has shaken the university community, and canceled all remaining homecoming events scheduled for Sunday. Winston-Salem State is a public historically Black university; homecoming weekend is among its largest annual gatherings, and its homecoming football game had been played earlier on Saturday.
