Nearly 300 March in Williston on Nov. 6, Carrying Paper Coffins to Protest ICE Custody Deaths

WILLISTON, Vermont — Nearly 300 protesters held a memorial march in Williston on November 6 to protest U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations. The procession set out at 9 a.m. from Industrial Avenue, carrying tombstones and paper coffins bearing the names of people who died in ICE custody, and walked about 1.5 miles to the ICE Enforcement Support Center on Harvest Lane. Led by local clergy, the march was part of Vermont's statewide 'ICE OUT' day of action; participants mourned those who died in custody and called for a more humane immigration system. Williston hosts two ICE facilities — the National Criminal Analysis and Targeting Center and the Enforcement Support Center — which have repeatedly drawn protests in recent months. Just the day before, on November 5, three demonstrators arrested at a Williston protest appeared in federal court in Burlington and pleaded not guilty to federal charges.
