Zoo Miami Worker Hospitalized After Possible Exposure to Potent Opioid During Giant Eland Procedure, Now Stable

MIAMI, Florida — A Zoo Miami employee fell ill on Friday, November 6, while helping with a routine immobilization procedure on a giant eland and was rushed to a hospital. The zoo said the employee was helping prepare the eland for transfer to another institution, and that the immobilization drugs used included thiafentanil, an extremely potent opioid in the fentanyl family.
Staff administered naloxone and took the employee to Jackson South Medical Center for further evaluation and observation. The zoo has not confirmed the exact cause of the illness but said the employee is in stable condition and remains under observation.
The zoo disclosed the incident on social media, describing it as a routine immobilization ahead of the eland's transfer. Zoo Miami is the largest zoo in Florida. The zoo said it is still looking into exactly what happened.
