St. Louis Committee Backs Raising Airport Director Salary Cap From $208,000 to $650,000

Saturday, October 31, 2026 · States · GSM News

ST. LOUIS, Mo. — A City Council committee voted October 29 to advance a proposal raising the salary cap for the director of St. Louis Lambert International Airport from $208,000 to $650,000, aiming to recruit a leader for the airport's planned multibillion-dollar terminal consolidation program. The proposal was reported October 31.

The director's post has been vacant for about two months, since the previous director retired in August. The measure has cleared the council's legislative committee and now goes to the full Board of Aldermen for a final vote; it is not yet law.

Lambert is the St. Louis region's principal air hub, and the terminal consolidation is a project of unusual scale, demanding strong project-management and financing skills. Supporters on the council argue the current cap cannot compete nationally for candidates with large-airport experience, and that raising it is an investment in the airport's future. The final vote and the hiring timeline remain to be decided.
