Minnehaha County Election Preview: Auditor's Reelection Bid and Five Candidates for Three Commission Seats

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — The Sioux Falls Argus Leader published its preview on October 31 of Minnehaha County's November 3 election, noting that beyond statewide races and legislative seats, county offices deserve voters' attention.
Republican County Auditor Leah Anderson is seeking a second term against Democratic challenger Curt Diedrich. Five candidates are running for three at-large county commission seats: the Republican incumbent seeking reelection, Democrat Kenny Anderson Jr., Republican Rick Bonander, independent Curt Soehl, and Republican Brent Hoffman. Three candidates are also competing for two seats on the county soil and water conservation district board.
Anderson, 60, of Sioux Falls, has nearly 30 years of accounting experience; her first election cycle in 2024 drew controversy when results were not released until 20 hours after polls closed. Diedrich, 67, served 16 years as an elected township assessor in Illinois and now lives in Hartford.
Among commission candidates, the incumbent runs on fiscal responsibility and day-to-day county services; Kenny Anderson Jr. served on the Sioux Falls City Council from 2008 to 2016 and spent four years in the Marine Corps; Soehl has a fire-service background and served on the city council from 2019 to 2026; Hoffman was elected to the state Senate in 2022 after 20 years in the Air Force. On November 3, voters will decide these county offices alongside state and legislative races.
