Lightning Strike Near El Mirage Elementary Sends 4 Adults to Hospital; No Children Hurt

EL MIRAGE, Ariz. — A nearby lightning strike at El Mirage Elementary School's bus drop-off area on the morning of October 30 sent four adults to the hospital; no children were injured, the Arizona Republic reported.
El Mirage police said they received the lightning report at 8:39 a.m. at the school near El Mirage and Waddell roads. A National Weather Service meteorologist said residents reported about 10 cloud-to-ground lightning strikes that morning. The school implemented a precautionary shelter-in-place after students had arrived.
Dysart Unified School District spokesman Ryan McKinley said several staff members reported being affected by the nearby strike. The four adults were conscious and were transported for further treatment after evaluation by paramedics. The shelter-in-place was lifted and classes continued on a normal schedule.
The same storms caused other trouble around Phoenix: at about 6:30 p.m., Phoenix firefighters rescued six people trapped in four vehicles in a wash near 40th Street and Camelback Road; all declined transport after evaluation. The metro area was under a flood watch that day, and officials urged the public to stay away from rising washes.
