Small Plane Makes Emergency Landing on Kauai; 1 of 5 Aboard Injured

WAIMEA, Kauai, Hawaii — A small airplane made an emergency landing near Menehune Road in Waimea on the morning of October 30. One of the five people aboard was injured; the other four were unhurt, the Kauai Fire Department said.
Firefighters were dispatched shortly before 9 a.m. after reports that a single-engine aircraft had come down in the Menehune Road area with five people aboard. Rescuers removed the injured passenger from the aircraft and carried the patient out on a stretcher for treatment.
Responding agencies included the Waimea and Hanapepe fire stations, Rescue 3, Air 1, the on-duty battalion chief, American Medical Response, the Lihue Airport aircraft rescue and firefighting unit, the Kauai Police Department and private landowners.
In an October 30 statement, the Federal Aviation Administration confirmed the aircraft was a Gippsland GA-8 that crashed in a field at about 9 a.m. with five people aboard, and said the FAA will investigate. Officials have not yet released the cause, the aircraft's registration, its operator or its route, and initial information may change as the investigation proceeds.
