LA and Long Beach Port Watchmen Extend Contract Talks to November 20, Averting a Strike by About 250 Workers

Saturday, November 7, 2026 · California · GSM News

LOS ANGELES, California — The Pacific Maritime Association, the employer group for the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, and International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 26 have extended their contract-negotiation deadline to November 20, averting a possible strike by about 250 marine watchmen. The association said on Friday, November 6, that the two sides had scheduled additional bargaining sessions to keep negotiating a new contract.

Watchmen make up about 2% of the workforce at the two ports and are responsible for terminal security patrols and cargo monitoring. The employer group had warned that a strike would affect about 85% of cargo operations at Long Beach and about 33% at Los Angeles. The twin ports form the busiest container complex in the United States; both set cargo records in September, handling holiday-season retail goods, equipment for artificial-intelligence data centers and auto parts, among other freight.

Talks had previously stalled, and the strike threat had raised concerns among retailers and importers about holiday supply chains. The extension keeps both ports operating normally through the pre-Thanksgiving cargo peak.
