California Passes "Plug-and-Play" Solar Law, Letting Renters Install Balcony Panels

Gov. Newsom has signed SB 868, the "Embrace Sunshine" act: starting January 1, 2027, California's 39 million residents may use portable solar devices that plug into home circuits via a standard outlet. Output is capped at 1,200 watts per household and equipment must carry UL or equivalent certification; the law waives grid-interconnection approval and bars utilities from charging fees or requiring permits. Author Sen. Scott Wiener said it will deliver real electricity-bill relief to Californians, including renters.
