Follow-Up: Jeffries Demands Trump Fire Miller Today; Schumer Calls Miller the Worst Possible Choice

WASHINGTON — After President Donald Trump announced on November 6 that Stephen Miller would become White House chief of staff, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries publicly demanded that Trump fire Miller immediately, and Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer sharply criticized the appointment, as partisan confrontation over White House staffing escalated quickly after the midterm elections.
Jeffries wrote on social media: "Stephen Miller is a dangerous xenophobe and reckless extremist who has American blood on his hands. His presence in government should be eradicated like a malignant tumor. Fire him today." Jeffries is expected to become speaker of the new House after Democrats' midterm victories.
Schumer said Trump had learned nothing from his historic defeat, called Miller the architect of the administration's most barbaric and inhumane policies, said Trump could not have made a worse choice, and vowed that the new Democratic majorities in Congress would fight Miller every step of the way.
Miller, 41, previously served as deputy chief of staff for policy and homeland security adviser and is a principal architect of Trump's immigration agenda. He takes over as chief of staff from Susie Wiles on November 9.
