Small Businesses Hurt by Minnesota's Boundary Waters Wildfires Can Apply for Federal Economic Injury Loans: Applications Open Through July 2027

Tuesday, November 3, 2026 · States · GSM News

Minnesota's governor's office reported in its October 31 weekly briefing that this year's Boundary Waters-area wildfires burned more than 64,000 acres across Cook, Lake and St. Louis counties in the state's northeast, and that small businesses in the affected area can now apply for U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) Economic Injury Disaster Loans. Governor Tim Walz had declared a peacetime emergency on July 12 and activated the state National Guard to support firefighting.

Under the SBA disaster declaration, small businesses, agricultural cooperatives and nonprofits in Cook and St. Louis counties are eligible, along with qualifying entities in the contiguous counties of Aitkin, Carlton, Itasca, Koochiching and Lake in Minnesota and Douglas County in Wisconsin. The loans cover working-capital losses caused by the wildfires.

Applications are filed through SBA's MySBA portal and remain open through July 22, 2027. The governor's office is urging affected businesses to prepare their financial documents and apply early.
