Alberta Votes Monday on 10 Referendum Questions as Polls Show 'Remain in Canada' Ahead

EDMONTON — Voters across Alberta will head to the polls on Monday, October 19, for a province-wide referendum on 10 questions, with polling stations open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. MT. The final question asks whether Alberta should remain in Canada or begin a formal constitutional amendment process that would lead to a referendum on separation. Advance voting ended on October 17.
The other nine questions, put forward by the provincial government of Premier Danielle Smith, cover immigration, health care, education, natural resource development and the division of powers between Ottawa and the province. Smith has said she personally opposes Alberta separating but supports the other nine questions. Prime Minister Mark Carney attended 'Forever Canadian' rallies in Calgary and Edmonton last week, urging Alberta to stay in the federation.
Polls show the 'remain' side ahead: an Angus Reid Institute survey conducted October 13-15 found 66% of respondents would vote to stay in Canada, and other recent polls have put support for remaining between 66% and 72%. Even if the final question passes, it would only start a constitutional amendment process; separation itself would still require a further referendum. (GSM report)
