Follow-Up: Elections Alberta Lays Out Referendum Count — Over 1.35 Million Advance and Special Ballots Combined, Separation Question Counted First, Official Results on October 29

EDMONTON – Elections Alberta issued reminders on October 19 about the unofficial referendum results reporting process. Results reported over the count period are subject to robust verification processes and are not final until official results are published on October 29, 2026.
Close of voting locations is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. Mountain Time on October 19 (7:00 p.m. Pacific); however, they may remain open longer if there are lines or if a voting location opened later than planned. The results website cannot be published until all voting locations in the province are confirmed closed. With delays earlier in the day, the earliest the last voting location will close is 10:00 p.m. Mountain Time (9:00 p.m. Pacific). Unofficial results will begin to be released once the reporting site goes live after all voting locations are confirmed closed, and will be reported live in real time as counts are completed and returning offices confirm and enter them in the system; counting teams will not wait for other teams in the electoral division to complete their counts before results are released. Hand counts will be completed for all ballots cast by special ballot voting, advance voting, Election Day voting, and mobile voting.
Advance voting and special ballot voting voter turnout was 43.1%, with 837,791 votes cast during the five-day in-person advance voting period and 519,082 votes cast by special ballot — more than 1.35 million ballots combined — so Albertans should expect the counts for these voting opportunities to reflect these volumes.
Unofficial results will be presented in a table, by question. Question 10 — the separation question — will be counted and reported first, followed by Questions 1 to 9, in order. Each question will be reported in aggregate and by electoral division. The advance voting ballot count may begin at 5:00 p.m. and will be reported by voting location; the special ballot count may begin at 5:00 p.m. and will be reported in aggregate for each electoral division; the Election Day ballot count will commence once voting closes at 8:00 p.m., as will the mobile voting count. The Referendum (General) Regulation requires counts to be completed and unofficial results published within 48 hours of confirmed close of all voting locations on October 19; the count will continue until all ballots have been counted, and timelines will depend on voting location closing times, count location, and voter turnout.
