Follow-Up: Camp Pendleton's Henderson Fire Grows to 2,080 Acres, Still 0% Contained; I-5 Closed in Both Directions Between Vandegrift and Basilone

CAMP PENDLETON — The Henderson Fire, a brush fire burning at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton in San Diego County, kept growing on Friday, Oct. 16. Cal Fire put the fire at 2,080 acres by midday Friday, up about 48 percent from the previously reported 1,404 acres, with containment still at 0 percent; the official mapped perimeter carried by the fire-tracking platform Watch Duty measured 2,079.4 acres, matching the official figure.

Cal Fire said the fire had crossed containment lines on its northwest side and continued to spread, with air and ground resources engaged and more on the way. The California Highway Patrol's Oceanside office said Santa Ana winds were pushing the fire westward, with heavy smoke and reduced visibility near the fire. The Camp Pendleton Fire Department has jurisdiction over the fire, with Cal Fire reporting alongside.

On the roads, Interstate 5 remained closed in both directions between Vandegrift Boulevard and Basilone Road, and northbound lanes at Harbor Drive in Oceanside were also closed; Caltrans advised northbound travelers to detour via State Route 78 to Interstate 15. A separate vegetation fire broke out Friday on southbound I-5 south of the San Onofre checkpoint and was handled by crews from the Henderson incident.

The evacuation order for the base's Las Flores (41) Area was lifted Thursday evening, and no new evacuation orders had been issued; officials had reported no structures lost and no injuries as of publication, and the cause remains under investigation.

The fire started at about 2:35 p.m. on Oct. 15 near Henderson Street and Brown Street on the base's western side; its mapped perimeter reached about 1,117 acres that day, the 41 Area was ordered to evacuate, and I-5 was briefly closed in both directions before reopening. The acreage was later reported at 1,404 before jumping to 2,080 by midday Friday.
