Follow-Up: Trump Says He Directed DOJ Suit in Alaska to Block Possible Senate Certification

Friday, October 23, 2026 · States · GSM News

President Trump said publicly on October 23 that he directed the U.S. Department of Justice to sue to block Alaska from certifying its U.S. Senate election results, Reuters reported. "I told them to do it," Trump told reporters.

The Justice Department had sued in federal court in Anchorage on October 22, asking the court to delay certification of the race between incumbent Republican Senator Dan S. Sullivan and Democratic challenger Mary Peltola until it can be determined whether another candidate on the ballot, Daniel J. Sullivan, confused voters. GSM reported the filing earlier on October 23.

Several election-law experts have criticized the suit as legally weak. Alaska's Senate seat is viewed as one that could decide control of the Senate.
