Follow-Up: 99 Ranch Market Is Closing Two Stores: Pleasanton Location to Shut December 5, 54 Workers Affected

Sunday, November 1, 2026 · California · GSM News

99 Ranch Market is closing not one but two California stores. After GSM reported the Chino closure on October 29, a further check of the California Employment Development Department (EDD) WARN records confirms that parent company Tawa Supermarket filed two store-closure notices on the same day, October 26. Besides the Chino store in San Bernardino County, a second store, in Pleasanton in Alameda County, California, will close permanently on December 5, affecting 54 employees. The two notices cover 103 employees in total, matching outside reports of "more than 100 layoffs."

The Pleasanton store, at 4299 Rosewood Drive, Pleasanton, CA 94588, is a familiar Asian supermarket for Chinese-American residents of the Tri-Valley area. The EDD record lists the filing as a permanent closure, received on October 26, 2026, with a closing date of December 5, about 40 days later, also short of the 60-day advance notice generally required under the WARN Act (Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act). The notice gives no reason for the closure.

The full picture: the Chino store (4024 Grand Avenue) closes permanently on November 15 with 49 employees affected, and the Pleasanton store closes permanently on December 5 with 54 employees affected. Both notices reached the EDD on October 26.

Pleasanton shoppers still have alternatives: another 99 Ranch Market at 2701 Stoneridge Drive in the same city is not on the closure list and remains open, and there is also a store in nearby Dublin (7333 Regional Street). Chino customers can switch to the Chino Hills store, whose address was listed in GSM's first report.

99 Ranch Market was founded in 1984 in Westminster, California, by Taiwanese immigrant Roger H. Chen. Headquartered in Buena Park, Orange County, it is the largest Asian supermarket chain in the United States, with 66 stores across 11 states, 43 of them in California. This summer the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) sued Tawa Supermarket alleging discrimination against non-Chinese employees; the company has denied the allegations. Neither the company nor the WARN filings state a reason for the two closures.
