UK Publishes 2026 International Climate Finance Results: 137 Million People Helped to Adapt to Climate Change, 89 Million Given Improved Access to Clean Energy
The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) on November 4 published the 2026 results of UK International Climate Finance (ICF), summarising the programme's main achievements from 2011 to 2026 across 15 key measures used to track progress in UK international development programmes with climate adaptation or mitigation objectives.
The UK government said International Climate Finance has so far helped 137 million people adapt to the effects of climate change, provided 89 million people with improved access to clean energy, and helped mobilise billions of pounds in private investment. Four departments share responsibility for investing ICF: the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, and the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology.
The UK is allocating around £6 billion of Official Development Assistance as International Climate Finance over the next three financial years, balancing support between mitigation and adaptation and maintaining a strong focus on nature, the government said. It will also deliver an additional £6.7 billion of UK-backed climate and nature positive public finance, and use public finance to mobilise further private sector investment.
Case studies published alongside the results show ICF helping Bangladesh sustain clean, affordable electricity for millions of people in rural and off-grid communities, and supporting Indonesia in scaling up protection of its globally significant coral reefs, supporting food security, sustainable livelihoods and greater climate resilience.
