Follow-Up: Air Force One Halloween Flyover Sparks Dispute in D.C.; Council Says It Got Only 15 Minutes' Notice

Follow-up: A low-altitude flyover on the evening of October 29 drew controversy in Washington, D.C., on October 30. During the White House's annual Halloween event for children, the presidential aircraft flew over the White House twice at an altitude of between 400 and 1,000 feet, according to flight-tracking data cited by The Washington Post, startling downtown residents.

The White House posted video of the flyover on social media, presenting it as a spectacle for trick-or-treaters. But the D.C. Council said on social media that the District, the Pentagon and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport were given only a 15-minute heads-up, and that many people were startled. A Federal Aviation Administration spokesperson said the flyover was coordinated with the agency but declined to say when it learned of the flight plan.

The sensitivity comes against the backdrop of the January 2025 midair collision over the Potomac River between an American Airlines jet and an Army Black Hawk helicopter, which killed 67 people and left capital residents especially wary of low-altitude flights.
