Nevada Names Its Newest State Park Crossroads Canyon: 1,627-Acre Park in Dayton Opens Public Planning Survey

The Nevada Division of State Parks announced on October 31 that the state's newest park property, 1,627 acres at Dayton in Lyon County, has been officially named Crossroads Canyon State Park.
The name came out of a public process that began in July 2026: residents submitted 2,400 suggestions, officials narrowed them to five finalists, and about 3,000 public votes cast in August gave Crossroads Canyon a majority. The name reflects the site's place in the Carson River corridor, a crossroads for Indigenous peoples, emigrant trails, ranching, the Pony Express and the Carson & Colorado Railroad, with a nod to Dayton's colorful 'divorce ranch' lore.
Parks Administrator Jonathan Brunjes said the name captures the layers of history that meet in the canyon, and that public participation will continue to shape the park. A public survey running from October 31 to December 15, 2026 will gather input for the park's master plan, covering trails, access and facilities.
The park is not yet open for recreation, and areas beyond Fort Churchill Road, which remains open as a county road, are closed while planning and development proceed. The division will announce the master plan and an opening timeline once the survey results are in.
