R. Scott Pace Inaugurated as Seventh President of Southeastern Baptist Seminary

Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, Wake County, North Carolina, inaugurated R. Scott Pace as its seventh president in a ceremony at Binkley Chapel on October 13, succeeding Daniel Akin, who led the school for 22 years.

Pace, 51, is only the seventh president in Southeastern's 76-year history. He assumed the helm on August 1, a day after Akin retired on July 31. Trustees unanimously elected Pace in April. A two-time Southeastern graduate, he earned his Master of Divinity in 2002 and his Ph.D. in 2007, and most recently served as provost and chief academic officer. At the inauguration, Board of Trustees chairman Andy Taylor presented Pace with a resolution and the presidential medallion, telling him: "Dr. Pace, today you receive a sacred stewardship. You inherit a rich theological and missional heritage." President Emeritus Danny Akin delivered a personal charge to his successor.

In his 23-minute address, Pace promised that "in everything we do, it's all going to be about one name": Jesus. He called the Great Commission the school's "heartbeat" and pledged that Southeastern and Judson College would be a spiritual, biblical, theological, practical and missional institution.

Southeastern has nearly 1,600 seminary students this year, making it the fifth-largest theological school in the United States, and its undergraduate school, Judson College, enrolls 1,030 students. Pace is one of three new presidents across the Southern Baptist Convention's six seminaries in a generational leadership transition.
