Shooting at Bend, Oregon Elementary School Leaves Multiple Victims, Including Children; Gunman Shot Dead

BEND, Ore. — A shooting broke out on the afternoon of October 15 at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, a city in central Oregon, the Bend Police Department said. Multiple people were injured, and children are among the victims. The gunman was shot and killed inside the school. Police said the total number of victims was still being confirmed and that no verified casualty figure had been released as of publication.
Bend police spokesperson Sheila Miller told reporters that at 12:59 p.m. dispatchers received a call about a shot fired into a car near the school. Around 1 p.m., multiple 911 calls reported that a man had entered the school and begun shooting, and dispatch issued an all-officer alert. Officers arrived at 1:02 p.m., and the suspect was shot and killed inside the school shortly after police arrived. Miller said it was not yet clear whether the suspect was shot by an officer or by someone else at the scene; preliminary information suggested it may have been a bystander, which has not been confirmed, and the shooter's identity has not been released. The school is located at 61530 SE Stone Creek Lane in southeast Bend.
Police confirmed that at least two people were taken to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend, with their conditions not released, and said several victims were transported to area hospitals while the total was still being verified person by person. "We don't have a number at this point. We know children are among the victims," Miller said. Officers cleared the building room by room and evacuated those inside while the school was on lockdown.
Bend-La Pine Schools said a reunification point for families was set up at Journey Church, 61303 S Highway 97, and asked families to go there rather than to the school. The district announced that all of its schools will be closed for the rest of the week, with activities and athletic events canceled. Superintendent Steven Cook said in a statement that the district was stunned and heartbroken, extended sympathy to the families affected, and said its immediate priorities were caring for students and staff and assisting law enforcement and emergency responders. Police said Silver Rail Elementary has about 400 to 450 students and roughly 40 staff members, serving kindergarten through fifth grade.
On the toll, Reuters reported that CNN and CBS, citing law enforcement sources, said three children and one adult were killed, and CNN, citing multiple law enforcement sources, reported that the shooter was a 16-year-old male. The Bend Police Department had not formally confirmed those death figures or the shooter's identity as of publication; GSM will update this report when police issue a formal statement.
The FBI's Portland division is on the scene assisting the investigation, and FBI Director Kash Patel said the bureau would make every resource available to local authorities. Oregon Governor Tina Kotek said she was closely monitoring the situation and was grateful to the first responders on the scene. The Deschutes County Sheriff's Office and the Oregon State Police also responded. Police asked the public to avoid the area around the school, and the investigation is ongoing.
