Follow-Up: Peltola Blasts DOJ Lawsuit as 'Corrupt' and 'Desperate' as Alaska Mail-Ballot Deadline Hits

On October 24, Mary Peltola, the Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate in Alaska, publicly pushed back against the lawsuit filed days earlier by the Department of Justice, calling it "corrupt" and "desperate."
The Justice Department sued in federal court on October 22, asking that Alaska be blocked from certifying the Senate result under specific conditions — namely if incumbent Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan loses and the outcome would flip only if all first-choice votes for a same-name candidate, Daniel J. Sullivan, were counted for the incumbent. Peltola said she was more concerned about the cost of the litigation to her campaign and stressed that she trusts Alaska voters to know whom they are voting for. On the ballot, the incumbent's line is marked "registered Republican, incumbent," distinguishing him from the same-name candidate.
Alaska uses ranked-choice voting, and the ballot lists Peltola, the two Sullivans and another Republican, Gerald L. Heikes. October 24 was also the deadline to apply for a mail ballot in Alaska, and early voting has already begun. A judge has not yet approved the Justice Department's request, and the case remains pending.
