Venus Williams Falls in Hong Kong Opener: Singles Losing Streak Reaches 17

Venus Williams lost her first-round match at the WTA 250 Hong Kong Open on November 2, falling 6-2, 6-3 to fellow American Mary Stoiana in 77 minutes. The 46-year-old wildcard did not create a single break-point chance and had her serve broken four times.
It was Williams's 17th consecutive singles defeat dating back to July 2025, and her 14th loss in 14 singles matches in 2026; she will finish the season without a singles win. Asked afterwards about playing in 2027, the seven-time Grand Slam singles champion said her future plans are up in the air. She also holds a doubles wildcard in Hong Kong, partnering China's Xu Yifan, and they open on November 4 against Lee Ya-Hsin and Wu Fang-Hsien.
In other first-round matches, No. 4 seed Maria Sakkari beat Carol Young Suh Lee 6-1, 6-4, No. 6 seed Wang Xinyu eased past home wildcard Adithya Karunaratne 6-1, 6-1, and No. 8 seed Katie Boulter beat Viktorija Golubic 6-2, 7-6(2).
