Follow-Up: Bend School Gunman and Two Victims Identified; Police Say He Fired Up to 15 Rounds and Carried 44 More

BEND, Ore. — Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz released further details of the Silver Rail Elementary School shooting at a Friday afternoon news conference on October 16. The 16-year-old gunman was identified as John J. Griffin II, a former student at the school. Police said he fired as many as 15 rounds in and around a classroom and was carrying 44 additional rounds of ammunition, including in a backpack.
Two of the victims have now been identified: Rhoam Summer, 5, a kindergarten student at the school, and Megan Lambert, 25, a teacher who was killed in the same classroom as the three students. The other two students killed, ages 8 and 11, have not yet been named. The two wounded victims — a 7-year-old student and a 54-year-old teacher — remained hospitalized.
Krantz also described how a teacher confronted the gunman: she threw her cellphone at him, then threw herself on top of him and tackled him while fighting to take away his firearm. She was not injured. Krantz said her actions almost certainly prevented further bloodshed.
Police have not officially released the name of the community member who shot and killed the gunman. His family identified him to NBC News and other outlets as Kaylub Giamanco, 36, a carpenter whose two daughters attend Silver Rail Elementary. His brother Kyle Giamanco told NBC News that Giamanco was driving home for his lunch break when he heard gunshots, saw the gunman enter the school, followed him inside and opened fire. Speaking to reporters outside the White House on October 16, President Donald Trump praised the bystander as a great hero, saying, in part, "thank God we had him."
As for the weapon, NBC News, citing investigators, reported that the gunman used a pump-action shotgun registered to his mother and purchased around the time of his 16th birthday in August; Oregon's minimum age to purchase a rifle or shotgun is 18. The gunman's mother, Shauntai May Nickerson, told reporters on Friday that she would have prevented the attack if she could have, and told CNN there had been no warning signs. Police said the gunman's parents are cooperating with investigators, who executed a search warrant at the family home and seized computers and other electronics. A motive has not been established.
Background: the attack took place around midday on October 15. The gunman climbed a fence, shot his way through locked doors and attacked a special education classroom near the school's entry. Three children and a teacher were killed before a community member fatally shot the gunman. Flags across Oregon were flown at half-staff on October 16, Bend-La Pine Schools were closed, and residents left flowers at a makeshift memorial outside the school.
