Sunday, October 18, 2026 · States · GSM News

A hazmat team in Juneau, Alaska, intercepted a suspicious envelope addressed to the state Division of Elections on Saturday, Oct. 17. According to Capital City Fire/Rescue, the FBI had notified the department on Friday that the envelope was expected to arrive in Juneau. After the U.S. Postal Service raised an alert at about 9 a.m. Saturday, the hazmat team retrieved the envelope and turned it over to the FBI; its contents have not been confirmed. The department said the response was taken “out of an abundance of caution,” and Juneau police closed streets outside the postal facility at the federal building. Fire Chief Tom Hatley said the incident appears to be part of a series of suspicious mailings targeting congressional and election offices; the FBI said similar mail has appeared in multiple places nationwide, some containing unknown substances, and that it is working with law-enforcement partners on each case.
