Follow-Up: White House Deputy Chief of Staff Richard Walters Resigns, the First Senior Departure Since Miller Took Charge

Sunday, November 8, 2026 · White House · GSM News

WASHINGTON — White House Deputy Chief of Staff Richard Walters has resigned, Axios reported on November 8, becoming the first major departure from President Donald Trump's team since Stephen Miller was named chief of staff. A source familiar with the matter told Axios that Walters tendered his resignation on November 6 and that the departure was without drama.

In a statement to Axios, Walters said serving in the Trump administration had been "the honour of my life" and that he would be forever grateful to Susie Wiles for the opportunity. Walters joined the White House in May as a deputy chief of staff and was a close, longtime ally of Wiles.

Miller, who takes over as chief of staff, said Walters would continue helping to advance President Trump's policies from outside the government. Axios noted that Walters's exit is the first big change to the team since Miller's appointment was announced, and whether the other deputy chiefs of staff remain is yet to be seen.

The resignation follows the change at the top of the chief of staff's office: on November 6 Trump announced that Wiles would leave the post to join the Trump political operation and that Miller would become chief of staff starting November 9, after Republicans lost control of both chambers of Congress in the midterm elections.
