Follow-up: 34 Florida Counties Under Flood Watches or Warnings, 7 Counties Under a State of Emergency as Record Rainfall Causes Severe Flooding

FLORIDA, November 2 — Record rainfall drenched much of Florida on November 2, causing severe flooding in many areas, with 34 counties in the state under flood watches or warnings. Governor Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency in the seven counties that suffered the worst of the deluge.
According to the Palm Beach Post (USA TODAY Network) on November 2, 2026, the seven counties are Brevard, DeSoto, Hardee, Highlands, Indian River, Martin and St. Lucie. Brevard County seemed to be hit the hardest, experiencing significant rainfall in some parts of the south end of the county, according to John Scott, executive director of the Brevard Emergency Operations Center. The National Weather Service issued a warning for Brevard residents cautioning of "extremely dangerous and life-threatening conditions," saying: "Do not attempt to travel unless you are fleeing an area subject to flooding or under an evacuation order." Other parts of the state, including Osceola, Glades and Indian River counties, also reported road closures because of flooding.
Schools in Brevard, Glades and Hardee counties were closed November 2 because of weather conditions. DeSoto County announced its schools would be closed November 3 and November 4, and Hardee and Brevard county schools will be closed November 3. A portion of east central Florida, including Indian River, Martin, Saint Lucie, Volusia, Okeechobee and Brevard counties, will remain under a flood watch through the morning of November 3. Rain is expected to linger Tuesday with skies expected to clear midweek; the National Weather Service in Melbourne said additional rainfall totals of 1-2 inches are possible and any additional rainfall could exacerbate ongoing, lingering flooding.
