Mississippi Attorney General Rules Officer's Fatal Shooting of 1-Year-Old Kohen Wiley Justified; No Criminal Charges

SENATOBIA, Mississippi — The office of Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch announced on October 19 that it has completed its review of the June police shooting that killed a 1-year-old boy in Senatobia and concluded that the officer's use of force was justified. The officer will not face criminal charges. The attorney general's office said the conclusion rests on the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation's inquiry and state law, Section 45-1-6.
The shooting occurred on June 14, 2026. According to the investigative account, a Senatobia officer responded to a suspected shoplifting call involving items such as diapers and baby clothes in a Walmart parking lot and fired at a vehicle moving toward the officer. A bullet struck 1-year-old Kohen Wiley, who was in his mother's arms inside the vehicle, and the child died.
Ben Crump, an attorney for the child's family, responded to the ruling on October 19 by demanding the immediate public release of the officers' body-camera footage and surveillance video. According to reports, the two women accused in the suspected shoplifting have not been charged with theft.
The attorney general's statement announced no further action against other individuals. No public schedule for any civil proceedings had been announced as of publication. (GSM, based on the Mississippi attorney general's statement and reporting by CNN and The Associated Press)
