Follow-Up: Riverside County 911 Outage Continues as Coachella Valley Cities Publish Alternate Numbers

The outage blocking some cellphone users in Riverside County, California, from reaching 9-1-1 continued through the morning of October 22. After the county Sheriff's Office issued its early-morning alert, police departments across the Coachella Valley released their own advisories listing alternate numbers for their cities. As of about 10 a.m., officials had not announced that service was restored.
The Palm Springs Police Department was the first to flag the problem, at about 2 a.m. through its community alert system, saying T-Mobile users might be unable to reach 911. The department's dispatch line is 760-327-1441, and residents can also text 911 for emergency help. The Indio Police Department said the city's 911 lines went down at about 3:30 a.m.; the cause is under investigation and, as of 7 a.m., there was no timetable for restoration. Indio residents who need police or fire assistance can call 760-775-3730. The Riverside County Sheriff's Office issued its county alert early in the morning, with the countywide alternate number 951-776-1078.
The alternate numbers by city are: Palm Springs Police Department, 760-327-1441 (texting 911 is also available); Indio Police Department, 760-775-3730; Cathedral City Police Department, 760-770-0300; Desert Hot Springs Police Department, 760-329-2904; and the Riverside County Sheriff's Office, 951-776-1078. The Desert Hot Springs Police Department said its own 911 system is working normally and its dispatch center continues to receive emergency calls, although it is aware of reports of wireless service disruptions affecting AT&T and T-Mobile customers.
The alternate numbers are for real emergencies only. Officials have not announced an overall cause or a restoration time. GSM will continue to follow developments.
