ST. LOUIS, Missouri — St. Louis City SC released an update on goalkeeper Roman Bürki on October 22: the club captain was transported to a local hospital for further medical evaluation and testing as a precaution after the U.S. Open Cup final on October 21, and he is currently alert and in good spirits, with the club's medical staff continuing to monitor his condition. Local media reported that Bürki was released from the hospital on Thursday morning; his availability for upcoming matches is uncertain.

In the final in Columbus, Crew winger Anass Zaroury saw his shot saved by Bürki in the 70th minute, then inadvertently kneed the goalkeeper in the head as he leapt over him. The 35-year-old Swiss veteran was down for several minutes before being stretchered off, waving and giving a thumbs up to the crowd; the club confirmed he was conscious and moving all extremities on the way to the hospital. Bürki was replaced by Ben Lundt in the 78th minute, and after 120 scoreless minutes Lundt made a save in the shootout to help St. Louis win 5-3 on penalties and lift the first trophy in club history.

Bürki signed with St. Louis ahead of its 2023 expansion season and has captained the club in all four of his campaigns, after seven seasons with Borussia Dortmund.
