Thursday, October 22, 2026 · City · GSM News

St. Louis CITY SC made history on October 21, winning the first trophy in club history by beating the Columbus Crew 5-3 on penalties after a 0-0 draw through 120 minutes in the 111th U.S. Open Cup final at ScottsMiracle-Gro Field in Columbus.

The host Crew controlled the first half, with defender Mohamed Farsi smashing an effort off the post. CITY goalkeeper Roman Bürki was forced off in the second half after a collision with Anass Zaroury. His replacement, Ben Lundt, saved Santiago Rodríguez's opening penalty in the shootout to give St. Louis the edge. CITY converted all five of their spot kicks, with Daniel Edelman delivering the final blow.

The Open Cup is one of the oldest soccer tournaments in the world and is deeply rooted in St. Louis, which calls itself America's soccer capital: between 1920 and 1988, six local clubs won the Cup 10 times in total. Nearly 40 years later, the trophy returns to St. Louis.
