Hughes Fire Burns More Than 10,000 Acres in Los Angeles County as 31,000 Are Ordered to Evacuate

A wildfire broke out at 10:24 a.m. on January 22, 2025, near Lake Hughes Road by Castaic Lake in the Castaic area of northern Los Angeles County, California. Named the Hughes Fire, it spread rapidly under Santa Ana winds and Red Flag Warning conditions, burning more than 10,000 acres on its first day.

Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone told reporters that day that more than 31,000 residents were under mandatory evacuation orders and about 23,000 more were under evacuation warnings. As firefighters gained ground, all evacuation orders were lifted on January 25.

The fire was fought under a unified command of the Angeles National Forest, the Los Angeles County Fire Department, CAL FIRE, the Bureau of Land Management, and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. By the evening of January 23, 1,745 personnel were assigned; strong winds briefly pushed a roughly 100-acre spot fire across the western flank, which crews quickly handled. The fire was ultimately held at 10,425 acres, with containment reaching 98 percent by January 28, when officials issued their final update. The cause remains under investigation. The Angeles National Forest was temporarily closed by order through January 31.

The Hughes Fire erupted during the most severe stretch of Southern California's January fire siege: two major fires in Pacific Palisades and the Altadena area had been destroying buildings since January 7, and Los Angeles County remained on high alert.
