Attorney General Bondi Directs Prosecutors to Seek Death Penalty for Mangione

Tuesday, April 1, 2025 · Justice · GSM News

Attorney General Pamela Bondi announced on April 1, 2025, that she had directed federal prosecutors to seek the death penalty against Luigi Mangione. Mangione is accused of stalking and murdering UnitedHealthcare executive Brian Thompson in Manhattan, New York City, on December 4, 2024 — the killing first reported in the related story linked below.

"Luigi Mangione's murder of Brian Thompson — an innocent man and father of two young children — was a premeditated, cold-blooded assassination that shocked America," Bondi said in a statement. "After careful consideration, I have directed federal prosecutors to seek the death penalty in this case as we carry out President Trump's agenda to stop violent crime and Make America Safe Again."

As alleged, the Justice Department said, Mangione stalked and murdered Thompson; the murder was an act of political violence, Mangione's actions involved substantial planning and premeditation, and because the murder took place in public with bystanders nearby, it may have posed a grave risk of death to additional persons. Following federal murder charges handed down on December 19, 2024, Bondi directed Acting U.S. Attorney Matthew Podolsky for the Southern District of New York to seek the death penalty in the case.

The Department said the direction is in line with Bondi's Day One memo as Attorney General, entitled "Reviving The Federal Death Penalty And Lifting The Moratorium On Federal Executions." Mangione faced both federal and New York state charges; developments after this story's archive date are outside its scope.
