U.S. and Iran Hold Talks in Oman: White House Calls the Discussions Very Positive and Constructive

In Muscat, the capital of Oman, U.S. Special Presidential Envoy Steven Witkoff held talks on April 12 with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. In a statement issued the same day, the White House said the discussions were very positive and constructive.
According to the White House statement, Witkoff, accompanied by U.S. Ambassador to Oman Ana Escrogima, conducted the talks with Araghchi, which were hosted by Omani Foreign Minister Said Badr, and the United States deeply thanked the Sultanate of Oman for its support of the initiative. Witkoff underscored to Araghchi that he had instructions from President Trump to resolve the two nations' differences through dialogue and diplomacy, if that is possible. The statement said the issues are very complicated and that Witkoff's direct communication that day was a step forward in achieving a mutually beneficial outcome.
The two sides agreed to meet again the following Saturday. The Muscat meeting was the Saturday meeting President Trump had announced on April 7 while meeting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House, when Trump said the United States was holding direct talks with Iran at almost the highest level and that the United States and Israel were united on the goal that Iran never obtain a nuclear weapon.
Iran's Foreign Ministry said the talks were held indirectly, with the two sides exchanging their governments' positions on Iran's nuclear programme and the lifting of sanctions through the Omani foreign minister, in a constructive atmosphere based on mutual respect, over about two and a half hours; after the talks concluded, the two chief negotiators spoke briefly face to face in the Omani foreign minister's presence. The Iranian ministry likewise said the sides agreed to continue negotiations the following week.
