Japan's Shipbuilding Revival Fund Draws Private Investment Toward a 2035 Capacity Doubling

Friday, October 2, 2026 · World News · GSM News

Japan's government shipbuilding fund is encouraging private investment as the country aims to double shipbuilding capacity by 2035, Nikkei Asia reported on October 2. Eight projects have been approved, with up to 311 billion yen in government support and around 900 billion yen in total public and private investment.

Major shipbuilders are expanding docks, factories, production lines and automation facilities. Japanese shipyards currently hold three to four years of order backlogs, reflecting strong demand for new vessels as the global fleet renewal and decarbonisation cycle gathers pace.

The challenges are equally clear: shortages of workers and engineers, the loss of LNG carrier expertise, and strong competition from China and South Korea. Whether the doubling target is met will depend largely on labour and technology.

The same week brought a related figure: the number of Japanese companies operating in mainland China fell to 10,118 as of June 2026, down 22 percent from 2024. Supply-chain diversification and domestic capacity rebuilding are advancing together in Japanese corporate planning.
