PM Tells Parliament Rwanda's Financial Sector Assets Quadrupled to Rwf16 Trillion

Friday, October 2, 2026 · World News · GSM News

Prime Minister Justin Nsengiyumva briefed both chambers of Rwanda's Parliament on 2 October 2026 on the government's work to develop the financial sector. The New Times reported that the sector's assets had increased fourfold, from Rwf4 trillion in 2017 to Rwf16 trillion in 2025, as lending, savings, insurance, pensions and digital financial services expanded.

The figures presented to lawmakers trace eight years of financial deepening in Rwanda: wider bank branch and agent networks, the spread of mobile payments, and growth in capital markets and pension funds were cited by officials as the main drivers. The sector's larger role in the economy also matches the government's aim of positioning Kigali as a regional financial centre.

Data released in the same period show agriculture's share of GDP falling from 25.6 per cent in 2017 to 20.3 per cent in 2025, as industry and services grew faster and the structure of the economy shifted. Questions from lawmakers were expected to focus on access to credit, the cost of finance for small businesses and financial coverage in rural areas.

Expansion has brought regulatory questions with it, including digital payment failures, cyber fraud and consumer protection. The National Bank of Rwanda was scheduled to present its Monetary Policy and Financial Stability Statement on 8 October, with further sector indicators.
