Australia's Updated Counter-Terrorism Sanctions List Takes Effect on 3 October

Saturday, October 3, 2026 · World News · GSM News

An updated Australian counter-terrorism financial sanctions list took effect on 3 October 2026. According to the Australian Institute of International Affairs' weekly review of Australian foreign affairs, the government re-listed two entities and 15 persons, in measures intended to cut off funding that supports terrorist recruitment, attack planning and the spread of hatred.

Those re-listed include eight members of a covert investment network, Australian national Neil Prakash, described as a prominent recruiter for Islamic State, four individuals linked to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, an extremist group active in Egypt's North Sinai, and a Gaza-based money transfer business that had provided services to Hamas, Islamic State and al-Qa'ida.

Listing means the assets of the individuals and entities in Australia are frozen, and Australians must not provide them with funds or assets. The government says regular review of the sanctions list is part of its work against violent extremism and its international counter-terrorism obligations, based on assessments by intelligence and security agencies.

In the same week, Australia's prime minister travelled to Fiji and Tuvalu for a pre-COP31 leaders' event co-hosted by Australia with both Pacific countries, making climate adaptation and Pacific engagement another focus of Australian external policy that week.
