Austria Tests Nationwide Sirens: 99.33 Percent Sound as Planned

Austria held its annual nationwide civil defence siren test at midday on Saturday, 3 October 2026. The Interior Ministry reported that 8,343 of 8,399 tested sirens sounded correctly, a success rate of 99.33 percent, while 56 units stayed silent. The mobile alert system AT-Alert was also tested nationwide the same day.
Between 12:00 and 12:45 the network ran through four signals in sequence: a 15-second steady tone for the test itself, a three-minute continuous tone warning of approaching danger, a one-minute rising and falling wail telling people to seek shelter, and a one-minute flat tone for the all-clear. The drill has been staged on the first Saturday of October every year since 1998.
Results varied by province. Burgenland, with 325 sirens, and Vorarlberg, with 230, both recorded 100 percent. Lower Austria recorded 98.90 percent, with 27 failures among its 2,450 sirens, a noticeable slide from 99.71 percent in 2025. Carinthia came in lowest at 98.65 percent, where 12 of 892 sirens did not work.
The national result was slightly below 2025, when the ministry logged a 99.56 percent success rate across 8,364 systems with 37 failures. The Interior Ministry and the nine provincial warning centres ran the test together, and provinces are to follow up on the causes of the failures.
