Germany Marks 36 Years of Unity in Bremen as Steinmeier Warns of Weimar-Style Divisions

Germany marked the 36th anniversary of reunification on October 3, 2026, with official celebrations in Bremen, the state holding the Bundesrat presidency, under the motto 'Many strengths – one country.' Reuters and other outlets reported three days of events, around 800 activities and up to 450,000 expected visitors. President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Bundestag President Julia Klöckner attended the ceremonies in front of Bremen's town hall, where a 17-metre replica of an Ariane rocket symbolised the city's industrial contribution. Merz posted that German unity shows what courageous people can achieve, and that Germany must stay together and protect its freedom.
Beyond the festivities, President Steinmeier used his reunification anniversary speech to issue a stark warning. Reuters reported on October 3 that he said a flood of disinformation spread by anti-democratic extremists risked pushing Germany back into the divisions of the pre-World War Two Weimar Republic. He denounced the intolerable political demagoguery of extremist forces threatening freedom, democracy and national unity, and said Germany needed well-considered, consistent and steadfast government policy more urgently than ever.
The warning followed September state elections in which the far-right Alternative for Germany took the largest vote share in Saxony-Anhalt and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, The Left won Berlin, and Merz's Christian Democrats suffered their worst defeat in the east. The AfD has led national opinion polls for more than a year and rejects the far-right label.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio issued a congratulatory statement calling the 1990 peaceful reunification a momentous achievement and noting Germany's defence investments. Analysts say the east-west political divide, anxiety over living standards and manufacturing squeezed by Chinese competition framed this year's Unity Day, lending the motto 'Many strengths – one country' a sharper contemporary edge.
