Chief Executive Congratulates Hong Kong Athletes on Record Asian Games: 11 Gold, 19 Silver, 24 Bronze from a 580-Strong Team

HONG KONG — Chief Executive John Lee on October 4 congratulated Hong Kong, China athletes on their outstanding achievements at the 20th Asian Games, where both the total medal count and the number of gold medals hit record highs.
Mr Lee said the Hong Kong, China delegation consisted of around 580 athletes competing across 38 events, and that all of them gave their utmost in every competition, securing a total of 54 medals: 11 gold, 19 silver and 24 bronze. The golds were claimed in wushu, swimming, rowing, squash, sailing, tennis, windsurfing and rugby sevens, with the squash, sailing and tennis teams achieving historic results.
The Chief Executive remarked that the courage, relentless spirit, perseverance and unyielding determination shown by the athletes on the field of play are the finest embodiment of the Hong Kong spirit, and that the achievement brings honour to Hong Kong. He added that the excellent results demonstrate that the Government's sports policies and its strategic resource support are on the right track.
He also thanked the Hong Kong Sports Institute, the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China, the national sports associations, and the coaching and medical teams for their support and dedication in nurturing local athletes over the years. The final tally of 54 medals edges past the 53 won at the previous Hangzhou Games, while the 11 golds are a marked increase on the eight won there — a double record for a Hong Kong delegation.
As the Games conclude, attention shifts to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic cycle. Tennis champion Coleman Wong has already booked an Olympic place through his Asian Games title, and the gold-medal sports of sailing, windsurfing and rugby sevens are seen as Hong Kong's leading medal hopes. The medal table will also frame the next review of elite-sport funding, which the Government has been increasing through the Hong Kong Sports Institute and major-event support schemes.
