Final Phase of Sisi Museum Refurbishment Closes Rooms at Vienna's Hofburg

Tuesday, October 6, 2026 · World News · GSM News

The final phase of the Sisi Museum refurbishment at the Imperial Palace in Vienna began on 6 October 2026, closing the museum area while keeping the Imperial Apartments accessible. The operator says the redesigned museum is due to open on 19 November 2026.

The closure covers the exhibition section of the Sisi Museum from 6 October to 18 November. The Imperial Apartments remain open, allowing visitors to see the historic living quarters of Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Elisabeth while work continues elsewhere in the complex. The museum sits at the Michaelerkuppel side of the Hofburg in central Vienna.

The palace complex served as the residence of Austria's sovereigns for more than 600 years. The Habsburgs ruled from the site from the thirteenth century, and the complex remained the centre of the monarchy until 1918.

The Imperial Apartments contain 24 rooms used by Franz Joseph and Elisabeth, including studies, residential suites and reception rooms. Once the work is complete, the exhibition on Elisabeth's life will reopen in redesigned form, while visits to the furnished imperial living quarters continue unaffected in the meantime.
