Brussels Airport Warns Friday Strike Will Cancel Flights

Tuesday, October 6, 2026 · World News · GSM News

Brussels Airport said on Tuesday, 6 October 2026, that several of its flights would be cancelled on Friday because of a nationwide strike, with staff at ground handling company Alyzia set to join the walkout. The airport did not specify the number of affected flights.

Belgian media reported that at least 140 flights were expected to be cancelled. A spokesperson for the airport was not immediately available to confirm the number. For travellers passing through Brussels on Friday, 9 October, the full scale of cancellations will only become clear as airlines adjust flight by flight.

The strike was called by Belgium's two largest unions against the federal government's planned budget measures, which unions say would make workers, pensioners and low-income households bear the burden of reducing the country's deficit. Public transport and air travel will be disrupted, and many schools and childcare facilities will also be affected.

The airport advises passengers to check their flight status with their airline before travelling. Brussels Airport is Belgium's main international gateway and the usual departure point for many Chinese residents travelling home or on business, so Friday's cancellations will directly affect their plans.
