Free Fleet Week Ship Tours Begin Today at Piers 27 and 35
San Francisco is a city in San Francisco County, California (a consolidated city-county). Free public ship tours, a signature of San Francisco Fleet Week, opened on Wednesday, Oct. 7, aboard U.S. Navy and Coast Guard vessels berthed along the Embarcadero at Piers 27 and 35, with additional piers at 30/32 and 15/17, according to the organizers' schedule. Tours generally run 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Oct. 12, with hours varying by pier.
Tours are first-come, first-served and lines are expected; visitors should be prepared for security screening, steep ladders and uneven surfaces, and are advised to wear comfortable, closed-toe shoes. Crew members stationed along the route explain ship missions and life at sea.
The rest of the Fleet Week calendar includes Blue Angels survey flights on the afternoon of Oct. 8, the Parade of Ships from 11 a.m. on Oct. 9 along the waterfront from the Golden Gate Bridge to the Bay Bridge, the air show from noon to 4 p.m. on Oct. 9-11, and Fleet Fest and a safety expo at Fisherman's Wharf and Pier 27 on Oct. 10-11.
Ship tours are Fleet Week's traditional bridge between the public and the fleet: many vessels post sailors as guides and set up naval career information points. Organizers suggest that visitors combining tours with the air show arrive early, as tour lines grow considerably longer on air show days, Oct. 9-11.
